New GROW Opportunities

New GROW* Opportunities

Starting in August, our guest speaker series will be moving to the first Friday night of each month at 7:30 pm.

Also in August, we will kick off several multi-part discussion series on Sunday afternoons. We will start with a three-part study of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s urgent and essential Between the World and Me on August 16, 23, and 30 at 3:30 – 4:30 pm. Keep an eye on the e-blast in the coming weeks for more information.

*GROW is an educational ministry of Fort Myers Congregational United Church of Christ. It draws upon the resources that make our church unique to foster an atmosphere of intellectual and social experimentation. GROW is a series of free classes, workshops, and social events led by staff members, retired clergy people, and guest facilitators who seek to edify our community through the enlightenment and organization of its members.

August GROW Series

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
August 16, 12, 30 at 3:30 pm

Hailed as “required reading” by Toni Morrison, Ta-Nehisi Coates’ letter to his son following the killing of Michael Brown by police, Between the World and Me, engages the issue of race in America in intellectually challenging and deeply personal tones. As police killings continue and protests over the murder of George Floyd persist across the U.S., there is perhaps no more important time than now to dig into this text.

FMCUCC’s GROW will be hosting a three-part book study on Between the World and Me. We will read the book together and reflect upon our own preconceptions of race, the racialized roles we play in society, and the task of change.

This book study will take place August 16, 23, and 30 at 3:30 pm. It will be conducted over zoom. Please buy the book with plenty of time and read part 1 (p. 1-71) before the first session. Reach out to Community Minister Wesley Snedeker at [email protected] with any questions.
