As law enforcement agencies come under greater scrutiny following yet more documented instances of police misconduct and abuse, it is essential for us as people of faith to be a part of the conversation as allies of the oppressed and agents for just civic reform. On Friday September 4 at 7:30 pm, we will be joined by Rev. Dr. Bernice Powell Jackson of First United Church of Tampa, who will lead us in a discussion on criminal justice organizing among people of faith and on her current work in Hillsborough County. We will also be joined by Rev. Dr. Rickey Anderson, founding pastor of Followers of Christ Fellowship Ministries, who serves alongside Rev. Bernice on Direct Action & Researching Training (DART)’s state collaborative on criminal justice, and who will address how these issues manifest here in Lee County. All are welcome for this important learning opportunity!
Rev. Dr. Bernice Powell Jackson is a globally recognized lifelong advocate for human and civil rights, serving in such contexts as the United Church of Christ national staff (where she was founding Executive Minister of Justice and Witness Ministries) and the World Council of Churches. She is former Co-President of HOPE (Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality) and still chairs its Criminal Justice committee. Currently, she serves as Pastor at First United Church of Tampa.
Rev. Dr. Rickey Anderson is Founding Pastor of Followers of Christ Fellowship Ministries here in Fort Myers. Prior to this role, he served twenty five years as Senior Minister of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Anderson is a leader in justice organizing in Lee County through his involvement in Lee Interfaith For Empowerment (LIFE) and serves as Recording Secretary on DART’s state collaborative on criminal justice.
